ABOUT PFC DIEGO RINCON

Hear Jorge Rincon speak on making the ultimate sacrifice for the American dream
Hear A.E. Dimond speak on My Country to Defend
The real heart and great irony of My Country to Defend is that an
immigrant family once came to the United States of America they
wanted to make a go of things where their children could live
safely, play freely without the daily threats of bombs and drug
cartels that their native Colombia presented. In doing so, they
achieved a kind of rags-to-riches story the United States affords those who
work so hard in the end, they lost the one thing that mattered most, to a
suicide bomber at a military checkpoint in Al-Najaf, Iraq.
They lost the soldier son whom they had raised to love liberty more than life; they lost to the War on Terror the very violence they had sought to escape; and they lost, in some incomprehensible way, the heartbeat that was their patriot team.
Diego Rincon was inspired to fight for his adopted homeland following
the brutal attacks of September 11. His anger and sadness following
this tragic event were shared by millions around the world. Yet
it was his resolve to fight against the lethal threats of terrorism
that ultimately compelled him to Iraq with the "Rock of the Marne." He served
with the famed Third Infantry Division of Ft. Stewart, Georgia
in a tip of the spear role in combat. The suicide attack that
took Diego's life at Al-Najaf was the first of its kind during
Operation Iraqi Freedom. Diego Rincon was awarded posthumous
citizenship in a gesture that inspired national law.
"PFC Diego Rincon and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his adopted homeland is a reflection of a deep and abiding commitment to freedom-that freedom being placed in the context of a family whose earlier life experience was not so blessed," says A.E. Dimond, the book's author. "It is the story of one immigrant family's love of country and the price they paid for their newly acquired American dream."
